Council and Community Celebrate Joan Murray

A group of 12 people stand in Council Chambers presenting a volunteer with a proclamation

On January 8th, the City Council and many community members offered their thanks and celebrated the remarkable contributions of Joan Murray, a dedicated community leader and advocate for positive change.

Joan's commitment spans decades, from ensuring the safety of our children as a Crossing Guard in 1957 to founding Clean Marin in 2014. She has left an indelible mark on our community through her involvement in various initiatives, including the establishment of the Mill Valley Community Center, contributions to Earth Day, leadership roles in the Mill Valley Library, and her unwavering dedication to Parks and Recreation.

"Thank you for this honor," Joan said. "It is very meaningful to me to be selected as the first community member to be acknowledged in this manner. For me, volunteerism is not just about promoting a cause or being a helper. It’s just plain fun and satisfying."

Community members joined the Council in expressing their heartfelt gratitude for Joan's tireless efforts and enduring legacy.

"Joan exemplifies the epitome of a community volunteer serving as an inspirational figure for others to follow. Her profound influence is magnified by her skill in rallying the community to preserve and enhance shared spaces," County Board of Supervisors Representative Stephanie Moulton-Peters said. "Her impact is profound and enduring, leaving an indelible mark on the landscape of community service in Marin County."
